Apple started experimenting with using custom lithium polymer batteries instead of the industry standard lithium ion. Lithium polymer cells are rectangular so there’s no wasted space. AT&T is reluctant to offer a less expensive data plan for the iPhone because it would lose a valuable source of revenue.
