Despite recent rumors to the contrary, it appears consumer electronics titans Apple and Samsung may actually be no closer to settling their differences over patents — especially when attorneys for the Korean manufacturer have resorted to name-calling.
AppleInsider reported Tuesday that Samsung’s lawyers appear to be pointing the finger in Apple’s direction, painting a picture of a company unwilling to settle, despite successfully laying down legal arms with Google/Motorola over the weekend.
“This is Apple’s Vietnam, and people are sick of it,” Samsung attorney John Quinn wrote in a new court filing which claims the company he represents has “always been willing” to sit down and settle the matter out of court.
“It’s kind of hard to talk settlement with a jihadist,” Quinn remarked, to which Apple attorneys retorted that such comments offer little hope for a “fruitful return to mediation.”
Quinn also appears defiant when it comes to how much money Apple might potentially see from the long-standing patent battles, despite sizable awards handed down by juries.
“Apple hasn’t collected a penny — or succeeded in taking any products off the market,” the Samsung legal representative explained.
Needless to say, Samsung probably has a right to be defensive: While Apple was found to owe only $158,000 in damages during the most recent round of courtroom battles, Samsung was fined $119.6 million by comparison, although that’s a far cry from the $1.05 billion originally handed down.
